Real Nicole was an outgoing and promising researcher who died in an accident during a secret government experiment involving Siberium, a risk she willingly took in an attempt to calm down the ongoing public outcry against thaumic research.
Her gruesome death served as the final nail in the coffin of Siberium research in Astrolibert, eventually leading to a complete ban on any practice of magic, and the research institute would eventually create an artificial intelligence, based on her mind and personality to honour her memory. While her original personality might still remain in some way, over time it was gradually taken over by a much more cold, calculating and efficient one.
Being an AI, Nicole doesn't have a physical body as her mind exists in the virtual space within the research facility. To keep her identity secret she frequently appears to others as a tactile hologram, unable to physically interact with objects but creating an illusion of being a real person.
While there are precautions in place to ensure she doesn't escape into the outside world, there's always a concern that she might be planning something, unbeknownst to others.
