Hyperborea

Hyperborea

Hyperborea Industries, LLC (Russian: ООО «Гиперборея»), also known simply as "Hyperborea", is a Belsevian megacorporation that specializes on extraction of Siberium, a mineral with supernatural properties, and its further research.

Following the collapse of the Northern Union and the struggles that the new government faced following the Exothaumic Emission Event, Hyperborea quickly emerged and bought up anything previously related to Siberium research, making the company incredibly rich and influential.

Hyperborea HQ is situated in Volkograd, a town that it has complete monopoly over due to being the biggest contributor to its (and the country's) economy, to the point where it has complete control over its social services, as well as every local busniess being owned by it in one way or another.

Hyperborea has many different subsidiaries, most notably the Arcane University of Thaumaturgy and Study of Magic.

History

The company was founded by Ekaterina Morozova (Russian: Екатерина Морозова), also known as Catherine, soon after the collapse of the Northern Union.

A skilled spy and interrogator during the war, Catherine turned to organized crime as a way to survive during the new nation's violent early years, quickly rising to the top due to her skills, reputation and ruthlessness. Having amassed significant wealth, Catherine saw a perfect opportunity to legitimize her activities when the government began selling off whatever assets it could to the highest bidder in an attempt to raise money for the critically important areas, founding Hyperborea and buying up anything previously related to Siberium research.

After reaching an argeement with Nadezhda Belova, at the time head of a struggling mining company in Volkograd and her former military commander, Catherine worked on improving Hyperborea's image by donating generous amounts of money to the town infrastructure and providing new jobs to the locals. Within a few years, a small dying town saw an unprecedented economic boom after revival of Siberium research and Siberium-powered technology, quickly becoming one of the country's richest and most technologically advanced cities, while Catherine gained complete control over it.

With Elizaveta Medvedeva (Russian: Елизавета Медведева) becoming the president of Belsev at the turn of the millenium and the following government restructuring, her first course of action to get the country back on its feet was to gain control over Belsevian oligarchs and their ill-earned riches. Because Catherine was a close friend of Medvedeva and was able to present her cause as noble, the two were able to reach an agreement where the government would gain half of the company's shares, with the remaining half split evenly between the company CEOs, allowing the new government to gain control over it if necessary while at the same time allowing Hyperborea to act above the law within set limits.

Nowadays, Hyperborea is one of the most influential companies in Belsev, with various subsidiaries and local offices across the country. While it cannot operate overseas officially due to restrictions on magic research in western nations, there are foreign organizations that, allegedly, have ties to Hyperborea.

Management

The current CEO of Hyperborea is Nadezhda Belova (Russian: Надежда Белова), a former Red Army captain who was deeply respected by her comrades. She is cold, reserved and calculating, rarely making public appearances, but at the same time cares deeply about her subordinates.

Originally head of a Siberium mining company in her hometown of Volkograd, Nadezhda was approached by Catherine with an offer to buy out the mines and all of its workers. Because the company struggled following the collapse of the Northern Union and government funding being cut, she had no choice but to accept.

Catherine, having deep admiration and respect for Nadezhda, chose to make her the CEO of Hyperborea after the buyout due to Nadezhda's reputation and her excellent leading and planning skills.

Nadezhda's personal assistant is Maria Kruglova (Russian: Мария Круглова), a highly energetic and competent businesswoman. She is Nadezhda's right hand and is personally responsible for overseeing most of Hyperborea's operations, as well as making public appearances and statements. Her contributions to the company are so valuable that Nadezhda even considers Masha's role more important than her own.

Aside from being face of the company, Masha also personally seeks out potential new employees, with extensive notes about them for Nadezhda to consider.

All these qualities make Masha a very likely future successor to Nadezhda's position.

Businesses

Hyperborea's primary businesses are extraction and research of Siberium, with their main research institute situated in the outskirts of Volkograd. Its territory is heavily guarded and trespassers may be shot on sight. The research institute houses several laboratories and manufacturing areas, as well as a large test field further away from the city.

Siberium crystals are cut and refined for use either by mages or for Siberium-powered technology. Manufactured tech includes Siberium-Augmented Efficiency Engines, Eravity-Altering Field Pocket Devices, Magic-Induced Lethal and Non-Lethal Weapons and, most recently, a handheld version of a device that allows changing the size of anything it's targeted at. While some of this technology already sees widespread use throughout the country, a lot of it is still is experimental in nature and a lot of prototypes are frequently manufactured and immediately discarded.

Hyperborea security officers also double as city peacekeepers due to frequently being required to move between different Hyperborea-owned businesses during their shift, armed with Siberium-powered tasers and stun batons.

Uniform

Standard Hyperborea uniform is recognizable by its maroon and black colour palette, most notably their distinct maroon jackets. Some employees may instead opt for a maroon shirt and black jacket combination, while mechanics and field officers tend to prefer maroon jumpsuits and fatigues respectively.

The rest of a standard uniform consists of a white, black or dark brown shirt with either a black or maroon tie, black or maroon pants for males while female employees may instead opt for a black skirt with or without pantyhose instead, and black office shoes or boots depending on the job and preference.

Tungsten Group

Tungsten Group, also known as Wolfram PMC (Russian: ЧВК «Вольфрам») is a private military company with alleged ties to Hyperborea.

While officially the affiliation between the two is unconfirmed, Wolfram frequently receives funding and equipment from Hyperborea-owned companies.

Tungsten Group is notorious for its activity in various armed conflicts throughout the world, most notably supporting groups that oppose western regimes, even though officially they present themselves as a security force only.

Most members of Wolfram are battle-hardened war veterans who had nowhere else to go, making them a highly professional and effective military force, although the group also has its fair share of daredevils and questionable individuals who joined either because of money or because they wanted to have legitimate targets to kill.
